Local trades

The work that keeps Kundrathur's GST returns busy

Parts are machined near Thirumudivakkam, loaded onto lorries for plants further west, and building material moves daily to sites across the suburb. Each step leaves an invoice, a challan or an e-way bill behind.

  • CNC milling machine cutting a metal block, with aluminium chips scattered around
    CNC job work
  • Rows of threaded machined metal bushings lined up together
    Machined components
  • Workers loading scrap metal onto an orange lorry
    Goods on the move
  • Coils of ribbed steel reinforcement bars in a pile
    Steel for building sites

Job work under GST

How material moving to and from job workers is treated

When a principal sends material out for machining and gets it back, no tax is paid on the movement itself, provided the paperwork and time limits are kept.

  • When goods go out

    Delivery challan, not invoice

The principal sends inputs or capital goods on a numbered challan. No GST is charged on the movement.

  • Time limits

    One year or three years

Inputs must come back within one year and capital goods within three. Moulds, dies, jigs and tools have no limit.

  • Filed by the principal

    ITC-04

Above ₹5 crore turnover it is half-yearly, due 25 October and 25 April. Up to ₹5 crore it is yearly, due 25 April.

  • Filed by the job worker

    Tax on the job charges

The job worker charges GST on the labour value. The rate depends on the work and the goods involved.

Documents

What to bring for GST work in Kundrathur

Bring these to our office or send photos on WhatsApp. For an existing GSTIN, the challan register matters as much as the sales bills.

  • For a new GST registration

    • PAN and Aadhaar of the owner or each partner
    • Photograph of each owner or partner
    • Electricity bill for the unit or shop
    • Rent agreement and owner's consent, if rented
    • Bank statement or cancelled cheque

Units on SIDCO or annexed village land often have bills in the old village name. The address on GST must match the bill.

  • For job work records

    • Delivery challans sent out
    • Challans or invoices for goods received back
    • Job worker's GSTIN and address
    • Scrap and waste details, if any

We check each challan has a matching return entry, so ITC-04 and the one-year limit can be tracked.

  • For monthly or quarterly returns

    • Sales invoices and credit notes
    • Purchase bills
    • E-way bills raised in the period
    • Buyer complaints about missing credit

Tell us which buyers have asked about their GSTR-2B. We check those invoices first.

Not sure your challans are in order?

Bring your challan book to our Karaima Nagar office or send a few pages on WhatsApp. We'll tell you what ITC-04 will need.

Process

How we run GST for a Kundrathur unit

The first meeting is usually at our office. After that, most months run on WhatsApp: you send the bills, we send back the figures to confirm.

  1. 1

    Review

We look at your GSTIN, filing history, challans and how your buyers report your invoices.

    First meeting
  2. 2

    Set the routine

Monthly or quarterly filing, ITC-04 cycle and who raises e-way bills, agreed in writing.

    Same week
  3. 3

    Collect and check

Sales, purchases and challans checked against each other before anything is filed.

    Each period
  4. 4

    File and confirm

GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filed after you approve the tax figure.

    Before the due date
  5. 5

    Buyer and ITC check

We confirm your invoices show for buyers and your own credit matches GSTR-2B.

    After filing

Timelines are estimates. Late bills, portal downtime and supplier delays can push filing closer to the due date.

Drop in with your bill books

Tell us when you can come. We'll go through your last few months and suggest a filing routine.

Common mistakes

GST mistakes we see in Kundrathur job-work units

Most of these come from treating job work like a normal sale or purchase. They usually surface when a buyer or a GST officer asks questions.

  • Material left with the job worker too long

Inputs sent out for machining sit at the job worker's shop for over a year without being returned.

    How National Filings prevents it

We track each challan's date and warn you before the limit, so it isn't treated as a supply with tax and interest.

  • ITC-04 skipped

The unit sends material out all year but never files ITC-04, because no tax was paid on the challans.

    How National Filings prevents it

We build ITC-04 from your challan register and file it on the yearly or half-yearly cycle that applies to you.

  • No e-way bill for an out-of-state job worker

A small lot goes to a job worker in another state on a challan alone, because its value is low.

    How National Filings prevents it

Inter-state movement to a job worker needs an e-way bill whatever the value. We set it up before dispatch.

  • Buyer can't see your invoice

A sale is missed or entered with the wrong GSTIN in GSTR-1, so the buyer's GSTR-2B doesn't show it and payment is held.

    How National Filings prevents it

We match GSTR-1 against your sales register and buyer GSTINs before filing, and amend quickly if one slips.

FAQ

GST in Kundrathur: questions from local units

Can I bring my bill books and challans to your office?

Yes. We're at Corporate Office No 27, 1st Floor, Pallavaram to Main Road, Karaima Nagar, Kundrathur, Chennai 600069, open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 7 pm. Message us on WhatsApp first so the person handling your GST is free when you arrive.

I only do job work on material my customer sends. Do I need GST registration?

A job worker supplies a service, so the services turnover limit applies. Many principals still insist on a GSTIN before they send material, because they need your details for their own records. We'll look at your turnover and customers and tell you where you stand.

Is ITC-04 filed every quarter?

Not any more. Since October 2021, principals with turnover above ₹5 crore file it every half year, by 25 October and 25 April. Everyone else files it once a year, by 25 April. It is filed by the principal who sends the material, not by the job worker.

What happens if goods sent for job work are not returned in time?

Inputs must come back within one year and capital goods within three. If they don't, the principal is treated as having supplied them on the day they were sent out, so GST and interest become payable. Moulds, dies, jigs and tools are outside this limit.

My buyer says my invoices don't show in their GSTR-2B. What should I do?

A buyer can only claim credit on invoices that appear in its GSTR-2B, so this needs fixing quickly. Usually the invoice was missed in GSTR-1, filed late or carries a wrong GSTIN. We find the gap, correct it in your next filing and give the buyer the details to check.

Do I need an e-way bill to send parts to a job worker nearby?

For movement within Tamil Nadu it depends on the consignment value and the state's limit. For a job worker in another state, an e-way bill is needed whatever the value. We'll set up a simple rule for your dispatch staff.

I sell cement and steel to builders around Kundrathur. Did GST 2.0 change my rates?

Yes for some items. Cement, for example, moved from 28% to 18% from 22 September 2025. We check every HSN code you sell against the current rates and correct your billing software where needed.
